RESULTS: PASSED FOR $600 ON 5/12/09
05 May 2009 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE
FROM: Leah Lee, ISA Social and Cultural Board AmyEstelle Soldevilla, Maharlika President Landon Pascua, Hawaii Club President Brian Hong, BASA VP of Finance Dannielle Legaspi Elizabeth Choi
SUBJECT:
1. Proposal: May is federally recognized as Asian Pacific Heritage Month. We are proposing for funds to be used toward this year’s APIHM event (also known as “UNVEIL”). This is a time for the Asian clubs and various organizations (i.e. MCR, MEP and ISA) to collaboratively celebrate this month as APIHM through worship, education, art, music and community. Our UNVEIL event last year was very successful, drawing nearly 200 people.
We would like to continue showcasing different aspects of Asian cultures (languages, food, worship styles, dance) to the Biola community as well as educate one another, including ourselves, on Asian culture in a Kingdom context.
2. Amount Requested: $1500
3. Problems with Status Quo: We are not based or funded out of any single club or organization. Each Asian club has their own individual events going on (Maharlika – PCN, Hawaii Club – Luau, BASA – Gloria) this week or within the past two weeks and we cannot depend on those clubs to fully fund APIHM. Each year we will have to propose for funding to put on this event. BASA has allowed us to use their venue (Calvary Chapel on Thursday night) and MultiEthnic Programs will provide funding for a few of the honorariums. We are still figuring exactly which ones they will provide.
4. Miscellaneous: UNVEIL has enabled Asian students to take on the leadership roles they already have within their club and also come together for with common interest of celebrating Asian culture. As a large percentage of the minority population on campus, this is a good event for the Asian and Pacific Islander communities within Biola to embrace and for Biola students in general to attend. It has also been good opportunity for us to train and advise upcoming students to inherit this event for years to come. Landon Pascua Brian Hong Dannielle Legaspi Elizabeth Choi
