01 September 2009 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE

FROM: Mark Tomlinson and Emily Anderson/Sigma Senators

SUBJECT:

1. Proposal: We are proposing for a ping-pong table to be added to the lobby on the first floor of Sigma Chi, along with four paddles and a pack of ping-pong balls which we affectionately refer to as the “ping-pong package”.

2. Amount Requested: $570-$670

3. Problems with Status Quo: Sigma Chi no longer has any recreational table games in any of its lobbies. Our former table and a pool table have broken and Facilities has been unresponsive in our cries for them to provide one of these to us again, so we feel that the senate is the only option we have left. Having a ping-pong table would serve many functions including enhancing the community, fostering cooperation and friendly competition, providing a method of relaxation from the stresses of academic work, and making the dorm feel more like home.

4. Miscellaneous: This is something which most of our residents want to see. We created a survey asking residents if they wanted to see a ping-pong table in Sigma (cost was mentioned), and only ten residents voted “no” out of the sixty-one surveys we collected. In contrast, we have been approached by twelve people who have expressed a strong desire for this table to be provided. Also, there has been a grassroots movement of sorts to donate towards the purchase of this table. Note that we will return any excess money to contingency in the event of a sudden contribution by facilities and/or more donations.

Breakdown of Expenses: $499-$599 Ping-pong table $30 Four rackets and a few balls $43.73 Sales tax – $4 (donations) Total: $569.73-$669.73
