MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. PRESIDENT / SENATE
FROM: Alpha Senators; Sarah Hernandez and Anna Kennedy
SUBJECT: Candyland Proposal
1. Proposal: We are proposing to AS on behalf of Alpha Chi to fund our annual Candyland extravaganza. It is an event where the Alpha Residents (328) and ResLife staff collaborates to turn our dorm into a living board game. Each hall is assigned a Candyland character to help transform their floors into an exciting place for local elementary school children to trick or treat on Halloween night. Every room is encouraged to decorate their door in an effort to help create a fun environment (the best doors win a prize). Not only do we offer candy to the kids of our community be we create a safe place for families to spend Halloween. A movie, games in the lobby, a bounce house on the lawn, and plenty of snacks are what helps show our neighbors that we care.
2. Amount Requested: $1,200. See attached Expense Report from 2008.
3. Problems with the Status Quo: This would be the eighth year Candyland has been funded through AS. Although ResLife facilitates the event their budget does not cover community outreach. Candyland is an extremely unique opportunity and tradition that unites the ladies of Alpha every year. Not only do we reach out to the community but we are also building community with each other.
4. Miscellaneous: The reason for the consistently large amount of money requested for this event every year is due to the fact that most of our supplies are non-reusable products and a majority of the Alpha residents participate. The decorations that are reusable (i.e. large murals) have been and will continue to be used as long as possible. About 1000 or more people come through on this one night. The Alpha ResLife staff does their best to get donations but this varies year to year. Residents buy candy to have outside of their doors and candy for games is in part donated. Last year they ran out of candy an hour before the evening was over. There is a leftover amount of money (originally planned to be used for new murals) of $300.00 the RD’s have said will be a cushion to help buy enough candy so as to not run out again. Any leftover money from this year will be saved and added to the budget for next year. What is great about this partnership between AS and ResLife is that it is a real life way we can “develop neighbors” and “help equip leaders to serve the body of Christ.”
