22 February 2008 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE

FROM: AS President/Senior VP/VP of Finances/VP of Services

SUBJECT: Inaugural semester of El Rincon

1. Proposal: Publish a Spanish language newspaper “El Rincon”

2. Amount Requested: $3000

3. Problems with Status Quo:

4. Miscellaneous: We are attempting to begin a Spanish language newspaper. Our purpose: To promote Spanish language and cultural literacy within the Biola student population for the purpose of fulfilling the Biola University mission statement of “equipping students in mind and character to impact the world for the Lord Jesus Christ.” As well as accomplishing this same mission through reaching Biola staff as well as surrounding community

Goals We hope to: - Educate and equip those who are learning Spanish as a second language. - Connect with members of the Hispanic community studying at and working for Biola University. - Promote Biola University involvement in the local Hispanic community through a true, enlightening, and entertaining periodical. - Glorify the Lord Jesus Christ through, truthfulness, educating, exposing injustice, and preaching of the Gospel. - To provide opportunities for Spanish speakers to develop their journalism skills through practical experience.

Current Editorial Staff: James Browning: Editor-In-Chief/Managing Editor Liz Choi: Design Editor/Opinions Jocy Espinoza: Copy Editor/Sports Editor Stephanie Montano: Opinions Editor Cindy Ortiz: Staff writer Karla Vasquez: Local/Biola Related Editor

The expenses break down is as follows: Articles – $12.00×32 = $384 Photos – $12.00×32 = $384 Printing – $825 Insertion Costs – $60 TOTAL = $1653 per edition x 3 editions = $4959

We hope to quickly have this newspaper fully driven by advertising. And as such we have committed to finding 30% of the initial budget through sources outside of AS. This proposal is not designed to be a biannual expense to AS. We believe that the advertising is one of the most important ways that we will be able to connect with the surrounding community. Any money that comes in that exceeds the amount not supplied by AS will go towards paying the $3000 back to AS. It will initially be distributed as an insert within The Chimes however, this will be for distribution and marketing purposes only, it is a completely distinct entity and will eventually become distributed as such. The insertion costs have been included in the proposed budget. The newspaper itself will be eight (8) tabloid sized pages full color on high bright paper (our design is meant to reflect designs commonly found in Hispanic periodicals).

We have been fully supported in this endeavor by: Dr. Longinow of the Journalism dept. Drs. Garcia and Perez of the Spanish dept. The Chimes
