1 May 2008 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE

FROM: Ben Chernikoff/President & Jonah Nagashima/Vice-President

SUBJECT: Additional Funding Proposal

1. Proposal

The Biola Cheese Society is requests additional funding for a semi-formal event to take place on May 1, 2008 in the Caf banquet room – a cheese gala that will include, among other things, a multi-course dinner and a live jazz band. We intend this event to be a time for students to relax (just before finals begin to hit) by dressing up and enjoying some fine cheeses. We did a similar event last semester, and it went fantastic. We had a turnout of over 70 and no major problems.
We hope to put on this event regularly each semester, and we further hope that it will grow to involve a significant portion of the student body. We already have a dedicated core of about 25-30 people who come to events regularly (including our esteemed advisor, Dr. Thomas Crisp), and we are hoping to use this event to expand our club, in turn furthering community on Biola’s campus. The cheese club currently brings together students (and professors!) from various races, interests, and dorms in the enjoyment of cheese. (It’s surprising how cheese can do this, but there you have it.)

2. Amount requested

We request $600.

3. Problems with status quo

Our budget for this event includes the cost of cheese ($100), other foods ($150), compensation for the band ($100), public relations ($50), and miscellaneous decorations ($100). Currently we are using the remainder of our club funds. (We are utilizing the cafeteria pack-outs to help minimize cost.) As of now, we have about $200 left, and so, we’re below budget. We will also be charging $4 per person to cover part of the cost (about half of which will be donated to Compassion International as part of the event). Nevertheless, by our best estimates, we’re going to fall short. We intend for this event to be semi-formal, and professionally executed, and we estimate that we’ll need some financial help to do so. We are estimating that 50-80 people will attend based on both our regular club meetings as well as the general enthusiasm of the students that we have talked to that are not regular members.

4. Miscellaneous

By way of conclusion, we believe that the following adequately represents the upshot of this event, if done well:

(1) The event will provide an opportunity to build community by way of capitalizing on increased interest and growth of the cheese club this semester. (We intend to invite, among others, Dr. Barey Corey and Ron Hafer.) (2) The event will provide a template from which to build for future semesters. (3) The event will provide a semi-formal option for the fall semester, as a way of relaxing and enjoying fellowship during the calm prior to the finals. (We don’t think that Biola currently has any event filling this function.) (4) The event will include some amazing cheeses. (Seriously.)

We at the cheese club believe that these benefits outweigh the costs, and so, we ask A.S. to assist us in this event.
