MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE

FROM: Theresa Soto/ President Karla Vasquez/Vice President

SUBJECT: Latino Awareness Event

1. Proposal: What are you proposing? We are proposing for an event that we will be holding on May 9th, 2008. The purpose of the event is to bring about awareness about the Latino community and to inform others of the world around them. Usually we hold a fiesta type event but this year we wanted to do something more educational. We wanted to reach out to the Biola community on a deeper level. We are using similar methods to that of MC’s Global Awareness and SMU’s Muslim Awareness. We will have 5 interactive rooms that will each represent a different aspect of Latin Heritage. The five rooms are as followed: Artistic Expressions (Music and Dance), Artistic Expressions 2 (Paintings, literature, photography), Food, traditions and customs, and Struggles (equivalent to a prayer room). Each of the rooms will be an interactive room that will provide guest the ability to experience Latin culture hands on. For example for the traditions room we wanted to have different traditional outfits for people to try on, then we would take their picture and email them the picture. Another example is the artistic expression room will be teaching people a couple of dance moves for them to try. After the interactive rooms we will host an outdoor fiesta. We would have traditional music, food, and performances. This will allow people to not just get a glimpse of Latin culture but to actually experience it. Our main goal is to allow people to truly experience the culture for a night. We did not just want to entertain people but we wanted to give them something with more substance, a lasting impression. We don’t want to be just another club that simply entertains their guests rather we strive to be the type of club that can be a bridge in between cultures and help people engage and walk away having done and learned something new.

3. Problems with Status Quo: In the past when UNIDOS has hosted a type of cultural event, we’ve noticed that the people that come to these events, come for a show and leave the same. We entertain them for an hour or two and then they leave. We want to change that. We want to have events were people can engage, learn and interact with the culture. We also see that many people have a limited knowledge of Latinos or the culture in itself and the only things that some to mind are salsa dancing, tacos and curvy women who are good at dancing. While the Latino community is known for the fun dancing and the tacos, we are also so much more than that. And we do embrace the salsa and all those other things; but we also want people to know about the Latino writers, the published authors, the creative artist in dance and art and also highlighting all the other aspects of Latino culture that so often get forgotten and overlooked. Although this event isn’t the cure to a much-complicated problem that has developed over the decades, we believe that it is a step in the right direction. For this reason is that we the Leadership of this club see it fit and appropriate to host an event such as this one. We would be encouraged and appreciative that our AS government would support our efforts to a more accurately, globally minded student body.

4. Miscellaneous: This event isn’t for anyone in particular; it is for the student body. It will be interactive, educational, engaging and fun.
