Documentary Film Showing

  • ? of ?

RESULTS: PASS FOR $375 ON 10/7/08.

To: AS Senate From: Chris Negrete & Emily Johnson Date: September 30, 2008

Proposal: We are requesting for AS to sponsor an event for the showing of the documentary film, “Voice of a Mountain”.

Amount Requested: $375.00

Key Facts about the event: • The event will be on Tuesday night, October 21st. • The night will kick-start with a small concert by Michael Barker and Will Anderson. • The Film is an hour long. • One of the Filmmakers, Michael Field will be at the event and speak a little about his experience. • It will be located in the Hope Amphitheatre. • Depending on AS Sponsorship, we would like to see this event receive chapel credit.

About the film: “Voice of a Mountain is a video documentary of the lives of rural Guatemalan coffee farmers who took up arms against their government in a civil war that lasted 36 years. This documentary explores Guatemala’s dark history from the perspective of those who saw armed revolution as their only hope for change in a poverty-ridden nation under years of military dictatorship. Ex-combatants talk about the bleak reality of the country that led to their involvement in the war, and the response of genocide from the Guatemalan government against its people. The documentary gives insight into their motives for joining an armed conflict as interviews reveal personal accounts of struggle, hope, tragedy, and the fruits of their resistance.” The website for the film is http://www.voiceofamountain.com

The Cause: “One of the main causes of poverty in Guatemala today is the unequal distribution of resources within the country. The gap between the rich and the poor is enormous, with a small minority of the population owning the majority of the land and businesses in the country…. We want to raise money for a scholarship program already set up for Santa Anita and a few neighboring communities. This will allow children to get the education needed to help further the development of their communities.”

Cost Breakdown: Advertising: $25.00 (Flyers, posters, Facebook event, bubbs) Event services labor: $350.00 ($50 an hour x 7 hours)

Miscellaneous: Although we are not representing any organization on campus, we feel that this event would be great exposure to the Biola community about a global issue. This event is not directly soliciting students for money but instead educating our community on a social justice issue.

Thank you,

Chris Negrete & Emily Johnson
