Black History Month Proposal
RESULTS: PASSED ON 2/10/09 FOR $1000
3 February 2009 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. PRESIDENT / SENATE
FROM: President and Vice President of the Biola Black Student Association (BSA)
SUBJECT: Black History Month Events
1. Proposal: We are proposing a budget for the 2009 Biola Black History Month Events. This month will consist of a, three consecutive week, series of films, poetry lounges with artistic expressions, and a gala celebrating Black History Month in remembrance of the Harlem Renaissance. Then the culmination program will be a historical themed gala held on February 26th 2008 in the Library Courtyard. The expenses listed below will be used to cover all the expenses necessary to put on an excellent event. As the president of BSA (Biola Black Student Association) one of the pillars of our club is to enhance the Biola community through cultural encounters. We are proposing that as the leaders of this student body, AS, would financially support us as we diversify the Biola community.
2. Amount Requested: $1,455 (breakdown attached)
3. Problems with Status Quo: As we look around the Biola environment there is a lack of sensitivity and awareness to cultural diversity. As February, Black History Month, approaches we have come together to represent not only the Black students on Biola’s campus, but those around this country who play a vital role in the development and history of this land. This program is not just for Black students; it is for the entire Biola community. We seek to engage our community and educate the school through the arts.
4. Miscellaneous: Biola is very limited in ethnic and cultural diversity. As a university there is money spent in many places and on several areas that are deemed worthy. We say, “put your money where your heart is” and support a time of reflection, celebration, endurance, and building up of the diverse kingdom of God.
