CSA Benefit Concert

03 November 2009 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE
FROM: Alicia Miller, Coalition for Social Action Director
SUBJECT:
1. Proposal: I am proposing for AS to assist in funding a benefit concert. CSA is putting on a Crisis & Conflict Awareness Week Monday 30 November – Friday 4 December and one of the days will focus on natural disasters. A current international student from Indonesia approached me with the idea of having his band play a benefit concert in order to raise money for the recent earthquakes in Indonesia. The money raised will go to World Harvest, a non-profit organization that is currently providing relief kits, food, and medical aid in Padang. The band will bring their own sound equipment, but needs a platform, a sound tech, and a lighting tech.
2. Amount Requested: $500-$600
3. Problems with Status Quo: CSA’s budget is very small and does not have the ability to take money from other areas in order to fund the needed stage, sound tech, and lighting. A benefit concert is a unique addition to C&C Week (other activities include speakers and films), offers a way for students to be involved in responding to the current situation in Indonesia, and increases affirmation for diversity and culture within the Biola community (the band plays in both English and Indonesian).
4. Miscellaneous: The benefit concert will be held on the mailbox lawn in the evening and we expect to have several hundred students stop by. Advertising for this event will be included in our advertising for the C&C Week.
