Sigma Ping Pong Tournament
RESULTS: PASSED ON 11/10/09 FOR $150
03 November 2009 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE
FROM: Mark Tomlinson and Emily Anderson, Sigma Senators
SUBJECT: Ping-Pong Starter Kit and Kickoff Tournament
1. Proposal: Our ping-pong table is coming soon! In order to celebrate this long-awaited arrival, we want to host a tournament that will consist of two singles brackets, one for the men and one for the women, with a match schedule which we will use as our player sign-up sheet. Players can sign up by fitting a match into their schedule. Players can also sign up on the same day, though priority will be given to those who signed up beforehand. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place in each bracket, although gift certificates are also an option. We will prepare for 50-60 people with about half of those playing ping pong in the tourney.
2. Amount Requested: $200
3. Problems with Status Quo: Sigma has many table-tennis players who have waited patiently for this table and these people are now itching to be able to play. We want to feed off of this excitement in hosting this chance for the serious players Sigma never knew to show off their skills, while doubling as a social event that even non-players can get excited about.
4. Miscellaneous: To speed up the games and help keep the tournament on schedule, we will restrict the traditional 21-point game to no more than 12-minutes. In the final match, players will play 2 out of 3 to win. Also, the date is very much up in the air as we do not know exactly when we will receive this table. When we receive the table, we will likely schedule the tournament on the next convenient Saturday given enough time for players to sign up. At this point, we do not plan to charge an entry fee as we have already secured donations from many in the dorm, and we also believe the presence of the table itself will be enough incentive to participate when coupled with the prize money.
Breakdown of Expenses:
$120 – prize money: $30 for 1st, $20 for 2nd, $10 for 3rd (x2)
$50.50 – food (M&Ms, chips, cheese & crackers, cookies, soda, etc.)
$23.44 – Sportcraft “Silver” edition Paddles (x4) ($5.86 ea)
$8.86 – 36 ping pong ball pack
+ $3.15 – sales tax on food, paddles and balls
$205.95 total minus $12 dollars in donations ($193.95)
