November 1, 2009 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. Senior VP / SENATE

FROM: Barak Wright SUBJECT: Campus Visit from Journalist Ken Myers

1.Proposal: I am proposing for a portion of journalist Ken Myers’ honorarium. Mr. Myers is scheduled to visit campus on Nov. 18-20.

2.Amount Requested: $800

3.Problems with Status Quo: The climate of major–specialization in the American university makes it difficult for students to find time for interdisciplinary work in their academic careers. Biola administrators have expressed concerns for our campus in this area and encouraged Biola students to pursue projects that can include diverse majors and disciplines. Of late, there have been few events or speakers on Biola’s campus that have encouraged students in this direction. Ken Myers’ journalism career has put him at work with individuals from all over contemporary culture. I believe that Mr. Myers’ career and insights can encourage students to think more broadly about their academic discipline and its relation to other fields, both at this university and in the professional world.

4.Miscellaneous: Ken Myers has been invited to give a combined lecture to Art and Torrey Honors students on Nov. 18, a general student body presentation on Nov. 18 with two other guest presenters, and a chapel address on Nov. 20. All of Mr. Myers’ travel expenses and a portion of his honorarium have already been covered by the Department of English, the Torrey Honors Institute and the Biola chapel board, respectively.

Ken Myers was a host on National Public Radio for several years, and later, an editor at several magazines—Eternity and This World (the predecessor to First Things Journal), among others. He is the author of All God’s Children in Blue Suede Shoes: Christians and Popular Culture and he has written columns for Tabletalk Magazine, Modern Reformation Magazine and Touchstone Magazine. He is the founder, host and producer of the Mars Hill Audio Journal in Charlottesville, Va.
