23 April 2008 MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE FROM: Dave Martina / Stewart Senator Res. Life / Stewart SUBJECT: Stewart KiltFest
1. Proposal: Every Spring, Stewart Residents gather on McNally field for one of the oldest traditions in Stewart: the KiltFest. Running strong since 1996, the KiltFest is a community builder like few others on campus, wherein Stewart residents compete against each other in epic games such as Tug o’ War, Kajabi Kan Kan, Rock Tossing, Mud Wrestling, and Ultimate Chicken. It is looked forward to by Stewart residents for the entire year, and freshman initiates eagerly await the splendor of the event, seeking the moment wherein they will display their peculiar Scottish strengths and prowess while dressed in kilts, and displaying their dorm colors proudly. The event is preceded the evening before by a root beer kegger to celebrate Stewart community and get people revved up for the main event, making it a weekend-long . However, this magnificent tradition is not without its costs. We need to buy hay bales (which we’ll sell back), chickens and other game supplies, and food, along with additional costs for advertising, etc.
2. Amount Requested: $1000. See next page.
3. Problems with Status Quo: This event has historically been funded by AS, because the ResLife department does not have the kind of funding required by an event of this magnitude. This year is no exception, and so the students of Stewart are requesting that part of their student fee be allocated toward this tradition. This event generally has a fantastic turnout, and it seems reasonable that this be sponsored by AS. This is Stewart’s only major event for the semester, and is the primary event of the year.
4. Miscellaneous: It seems to be going out of vogue in our culture to celebrate established traditions-we love to discuss “change” and “progress”, often at the cost of genuine, age-old community. Biola is no different-everyone seems to want to start a new tradition, leave their legacy, make their mark, but at what cost? We see events like Punk ‘n’ Pie do well every year, but we see other traditions like BABS that have gone by the wayside. Stewart Hall also suffers from this infliction—in my time here I have seen some traditions falter and die due to those responsible not being aware, not being motivated, or simply not being careful of the legacy that they inherited. With our age-old Kilt RUN (our long-time rivalry with Emerson, wherein we would taunt and challenge them physically) having been neutered to a mere Nationball exercise (in which Stewart has remained the victor for 7 years strong), we long to see our traditions upheld, so that we may remain strong and proud of being Scottish!
