Get Some Rest
I don’t know about you, but lately I’ve been feeling like all the homework, tests, project deadlines, emails I need to respond to, and chores I need to do just keep piling up. I keep telling myself that the light at the end of the tunnel is just around the corner… but I’m starting to think tunnels don’t have corners; the light just isn’t there. It’s been hard to find time for sleep in the midst of all of this, yet over and over again I think of God’s promise: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). I’m here, God… now where is my rest???
While we like to think of rest as an implication of sleep, I wonder if the type of “rest” Jesus was talking about is not just about sleep…
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” – Psalm 91:1-2
Trust. When we realize we are under God’s refuge, we have absolutely nothing to fear. That doesn’t automatically mean that we will get endless amounts of sleep, but that we can rest, in complete trust that God is who He says He is and can do what He says He can do. God is in absolute control. The more we know who He is, the more we can trust that He actually is in absolute control and that we have nothing to worry about. The Psalm goes on to say that He will “cover you with his feather,” “be your shield,” “guard you,” “lift you up,” “rescue, protect, deliver, honor, satisfy… you”, He will even “save you from the fowler’s snare”! Maybe you have a more elaborate vocabulary than I do, but personally I don’t know what a fowler is. But I DO know that whatever it is, I don’t have to worry about it because God has got me covered and I can rest knowing He’s in control!
Challenge of the week: Try getting some rest… and I’m not talking about a nap! Demonstrate confidence in God’s complete control even in the midst of your busy schedule and breathe easy in the knowledge of His ultimate power.
