Biolan Editor-in-Chief

Basic Function and Responsibility: The Biolan Editor-in-Chief has complete authority over The Biolan, and is ultimately responsible for the content that is included in the yearbook. This person supervises all Biolan employees (e.g. designers, photographers, writers, etc.), and oversees the design and thematic consistency of the yearbook.

Duties: 1. Recruit a qualified staff and facilitate teamwork between employees.

2. Oversee the development of the theme and dedication for The Biolan.

3. Schedule all production deadlines for The Biolan within two weeks of receiving the publisher’s deadlines.

4. Participate in and be ultimately responsible for all aspects involved in the production of The Biolan.

5. Supervise the layout of The Biolan with the help of the Design Editor.

6. Assist the Copy Editor in setting up specific copy guidelines and writing necessary copy.

7. Ensure that all photography needs are communicated to the Photo Editor in a efficient and timely manner.

8. Delegate all necessary tasks to staff members and interns.

9. Order all necessary supplies with the assistance and approval of the Office Manager.

10. Responsible for organizing or overseeing office procedures.

11. Organize and execute the distribution of The Biolan to the student body, and to the faculty, staff, and administrators who wish to purchase the annual. The Editor-in-Chief will also keep a record of those who receive each annual.

12. Secure the publisher and student portrait photographer for the following year in conjunction with the Office Manager.

13. In the event of an unsatisfactory performance by any staff member, the Editor-in-Chief is empowered to take suitable action, including dismissal of that member from any and all positions held within Biolan staff. Dismissal must be approved by the faculty Advisor and the Student Media Board.

14. Conduct weekly staff meetings to establish group goals, facilitate planning, develop unity within the staff. Call special meetings as deemed necessary.

15. Help train and transition the incoming Biolan Editor-in-Chief for the proceeding school year during the Spring Semester.

Supervision Received: Biolan Advisor, Student Media Board

Supervision of Others: Office Manager, Design Editor, Graphic Designers (2), Photo Editor, Photographer, Copy Editor, Copy Writer and volunteer staff.

Qualifications: General: Familiarity with graphic design trends and programs. Strong leadership and organizational skills. Ability to work with a staff. Education and Experiences: At the time of election or appointment, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 on a scale of 4.00, have completed at least two semesters at Biola University with a full time student status, and currently be enrolled as a full time student. During the term of service, maintain the previously mentioned grade point average on a semester basis and maintain a full time student status. Experience in independent publishing, yearbook, or magazine publication are highly recommended.
