MEMORANDUM FOR A.S. SENIOR VP / SENATE

FROM: Dave Martina, Film Music Guild President; Katherine Devine, Project Manager; Kyle Chezum, Marketing Director; Dr. Robert Denham, Faculty Advisor

SUBJECT: Proposal for funding for Film Music Guild Conference 2009 website.

1. Proposal: The Film Music Guild is asking for money to renovate our website for functionality and for the promotion of a campus-wide, intercollegiate conference in October of 2009. This conference is, as far as we know, the only interdisciplinary, student-focused conference of its kind in either the film industry or the educational world.

2. Amount Requested: $1000. This will enable us to begin redesign and put together a style guide/brand ID for our other designers to work from for other promotional materials and branding content. The $200 that was awarded by club funding this semester is earmarked for two special events with guest speakers, and was awarded specifically for that purpose.

3. Problems with Status Quo: Last year we spent $400 from club funding on a website, designed by a music student for a particular purpose: general info and updates. Since then, our web master has graduated, is no longer able to work on the site, and it is severely outdated. The look and feel of it is not as professional as it needs to be to be taken seriously in the entertainment world (besides being less than impressive). Finally, and most importantly, it is not functional as a promotional tool to show to sponsors and disseminate information about the Guild and our major event, the Film Music Guild Conference 2009. Our primary marketing is viral/new media-based, especially considering that the majority of our sign-ups are expected during the summer. With a viral campaign, a website is incredibly important to act as a receiver for traffic from the ads. Also, we are pitching to major corporations such as Broadcast Music International (BMI) and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars) for funding, and we will not receive it if we do not have the promotional presentation to back it up.

4. Miscellaneous: Understanding the financial bind that AS is in, we have limited our request to an amount that will help us get the process started. Our website will actually cost us close to $3500 in total, and our conference is budgeted at $15,000, but we are only asking A.S. for $1000 for a conference that will bring in heavyweights in the entertainment industry such as John Ottman (Usual Suspects, Superman Returns, X-Men 2), Allison Wright Clark (Pirates of the Caribbean), and Michael Giacchino (LOST, The Incredibles, Ratatouille). It will also put Biola on the map for academic reputation in this area, something that is a stated goal of the Weaver administration. We have branding support from the CMA department, and the Music department, but with the budget slashes no one has any money to commit for this fiscal year. We are proposing to the senate because this process cannot happen too soon, and there’s no telling when the rest of the money will come in.
