Social Justice Ministry

Teen Challenge

Teen Challenge is a ministry that ministers to the Youth of Compton and Lynwood, through sports, small groups, and relationships, at a Teen Challenge Recreational Facility. This facility offers basketball, handball, pool, a play ground, and a safe environment, as the only piece of land in both cities not claimed by a gang. On a typical evening, the Rec. Facility will see about 100 kids ranging in age from 2 to 22 come through its gates. As Biola students we seek to impact the Youth of the community for Jesus Christ and fuel leaders within these cities that will radiate lasting change and bring God’s Kingdom to earth.

Volunteers pick an afternoon a week to go to the center in downtown L.A. The children that come to the program are homeless and need consistancy in thier lives from adults which S.A.Y Yes! mentorship provides. Throughout the week volunteers help elementary or highschool children with their homework and spend time with the children mentoring them by spending one-on-one time.

ISA (International Students Association) Watts Outreach

Trips go every Monday, Tuesday and Friday We recommend that you choose a day and continue to go weekly on that day throughout the all semester. All trips meet at the fountain at 2pm, carpool to Watts, and return to Biola by 6pm.

The Watts Outreach sends groups of students to Watts every Monday Tuesday and Friday to volunteer at a Lighthouse Community Church’s Outreach After School Program. Volunteers tutor students, play basketball or jump rope with students, help serve a daily meal, help in music and karate classes, and just be there to support the staff at the program. Volunteers are in a special position to befriend, mentor and pray for the students in the program. This ministry serves as a bridge between Biola students, both International and non-International, and the church in Watts, Los Angeles. Our purpose is to serve God by serving the urban poor of Los Angeles in partnership with the local church. We also purpose to know God more fully through experiential discipleship and community reflection.
